Kumu Reverse Modeling
Why didn't someone tell me this sooner?
Welcome to another of SystemsWiki’s Musings exploring how a deeper understanding of relationships and their implications can enable more effective action.
I started reading “The Deep Structure of Democratic Crisis” by Collier & Grumbach and thought it would be a marvelous basis for an initial Kumu model for future research. After several attempts to read the article and craft a model from it, I gave up in frustration. There was just something about going from the document to making connections in the mode that wasn’t working, at least for me. Though there are times when patient relentlessness, or is that relentless patience, finally pays off.
On May 1st, oh, that was like today wasn’t it? I completed the “Kumu Loop Identification” musing detailing how I finally figured out how to craft a Python program that would identify all the loops, along with their type, in a Kumu project. Being able to export a model as a .csv file and have the program tell me if I missed any of the loops was marvelous. And just as I finished the musing I had another one of those duh-me! moments.
I’ve always known that you could develop the Kumu project data in a spreadsheet with one tab having the elements and a second tab with the element relationships though I never realized you could omit the elements tab and just import the element relationships tab. You can actually import a raw .csv file to create the model then have the Phyton program read the file and identify where the loops are. I’m flying!
Take a look at the following short video for a sense of how it’s working.
What perspectives do you have that might improve the understanding?

Powerful breakthrough! Very useful. My intuition says "You Can Learn Anything Through Reverse Engineering by Ron Friedman, Harvard Business Review, November 04, 2021" could be useful. No particular logic to that statement, bah humbug.
You've always fascinated me Gene...But I remained to be just a silent admirer. I read your articles since I became interested with SD many years back. With Kumu I even became more interested as SD become more accessible and friendlier for me at least. Keep up with your musings. Thank you so much.
