How easy is it to be essentially brain dead? I’ve been pondering Collaboration & Competition for a couple of weeks now, reading a few articles here and there, and then it dawned on me… WTF Over? I have continually claimed that “And?” was the approach I use to understand anything and everything. I even wrote a musing entitled “And?” which depicts the six steps I use to construct a model. And yet, for two weeks I’ve been contemplating Collaboration & Competition and never started the model till this morning. How the hell does this keep happening? This is not the first time this has happened and I’d like it to be the last, though it’s not likely to be. I suppose it’s a marvelous demonstration of the claim of Chris Argyris that our espoused theories and our theories-in-use can be completely contrary without our actually realizing it.

So here’s the initial version of the model, and though it’s not what I initially intended it to be, it was a learning experience. I’d really appreciate your feedback so it can continue to evolve.

Great job on describing one of your though process, Gene! Thanks for that!

I do something similar in my practice extracting elements and connections from the day-to-day interactions of working groups and their formal documents.

From my perspective, I see collaboration and competition as forms of cooperation . The paradoxical relationship between Cooperation and Dissociation interests me. In terms of hierarchy it is this paradoxical relationship which closes the feedback loop. In simple terms to publicly dissociate from short term harm, yet secretly cooperate because of perceived long term benefits.
